Student Digs in Ireland: Five Days, Seven Days and Holiday Access

HomeScout Team12 October 2026

A digs offer can provide a room in someone's home, sometimes with meals or bills included. The important question is what the price buys. If you have no other home in Ireland, accommodation that ends every Friday may leave you searching and paying again each weekend.

'Five-day' and 'seven-day' are useful search labels, not complete terms. The University of Limerick's off-campus service distinguishes those options alongside resident-landlord and shared-property arrangements. Confirm the precise nights and access rules with the advertiser before treating an offer as a full-time home.

Put occupancy dates ahead of the headline price

Ask which nights you can sleep there, when you must leave and when you may return. Five weekdays might mean four nights, five nights or another schedule; do not settle that question by guessing. Confirm whether the room is available during reading weeks, exams, placements, Christmas, Easter and summer.

Ask whether you can leave belongings when away and whether anyone else uses the room. If your flight arrives on Saturday or you have a weekend shift, the ordinary weekday arrangement may not cover it. Put any exception and its charge in writing before relying on it.

For a student who returns to a family home each weekend, limited access may fit. For someone arriving internationally without a second base, the travel, alternative accommodation and repeated packing can change the decision.

Compare the cost of a place for every night you need

Use actual quotes for weekend accommodation and travel, not the assumption that somewhere inexpensive will be available.

Illustrative four-week comparison, not current market rates: Option A costs €150 for each agreed weekday block, or €600 for four blocks. The student also needs eight weekend nights at an assumed €30 each, adding €240. That makes €840 before any extra travel or meals. Option B costs €190 for each seven-night week, or €760 for four weeks. If both meet the student's needs, Option B has the lower housing total despite the higher advertised weekly figure.

Replace every number with a verified offer. The example uses four weeks, not a conversion of weekly prices into calendar-month rent. Deposits are separate cash requirements; do not treat refundable money as food or travel spending.

Agree the household routine

Meals need detail. Which meals and days are included? Can you use the kitchen if class or work ends after dinner? Check laundry, storage, broadband, heating and any utility allowance. Agree cleaning responsibilities, guests, overnight visitors and quiet hours.

Ask about bedroom privacy and how the homeowner will enter the room. A household can be welcoming while still having a routine that does not suit yours. Discuss it before the deposit, rather than hoping the arrangement will change after arrival.

Understand the agreement you are entering

Renting a room that forms part of the landlord's home generally involves a licence rather than a standard residential tenancy. The protections and dispute routes differ. A self-contained flat in the property can be different: Citizens Information explains the distinction.

Ask for written terms covering rent, deposit, occupancy, household rules, notice and return of the deposit. The University of Galway's Rent-a-Room resource links to the voluntary framework and sample licence agreement. A room advertised to students does not automatically become student-specific accommodation with SSA rules.

If joining a home advertised by an existing tenant rather than the owner, ask who authorises the offer and what agreement applies. Do not assume every shared-house room is owner-occupied digs.

Use university channels and inspect the offer

Contact your institution about relevant room services. UCC's international accommodation advice includes private and owner-occupied options through StudentPad. Check the institution's eligibility and listing instructions; appearing on a service does not replace a viewing or verification of the agreement.

Test the actual address against your campus and schedule with TFI's journey planner. A five-day arrangement can work for classes but fail for a required weekend journey.

Read the student room workflow for enquiry and viewing questions, or the local Cork, Galway and Limerick guides. Create a free account for your chosen city to organise a HomeScout brief alongside university digs services. Dublin, Cork, Galway and Limerick are supported; verify room coverage and all occupancy days with the original advertiser.
